First Congressional District of Alabama

Profile

The First Congressional District of Alabama, comprised of the six southwestern counties in the state, spans from the white beaches of Alabama's gulf coast to the dense forests of Clarke and Monroe Counties.

While timber production remains a major contributor to the local economy, south Alabama is also home to numerous shipping, seafood, aerospace, chemical, medical and tourism businesses and industries. One of the nation's largest outdoor shopping facilities, housing over 150 major name-brand product outlet stores, is located in the City of Foley just minutes from the beaches in Baldwin County.

From an educational standpoint, the First Congressional District ranks second to none in terms of the number and quality of educational institutions available. Boasting three four-year universities and four community colleges, south Alabama is also home to the Dauphin Island Sea Lab (offering extended study in the field of marine biology) and the United States Sports Academy (which produces highly qualified graduates in all fields of sports science).

Additionally, Mobile is the birthplace of Mardi Gras, home of the annual Distinguished Young Women program (formerly known as America’s Junior Miss), and both the Senior Bowl and the GMAC Bowl, which showcase some of the best college football talent from all across the country.
